All female rescue party led by Uhura. No one died.
You know that’s right.
Nichelle Nichols’ Music Video: “Rahab the Harlot”
When I told Nichelle Nichols that I fancy myself as a musician, she said, “I’m a singer too! Did you know that? Look me up on youtube.”
So I did.
Um.
She is still very much an inspiration to me.
Just finished watching Star Trek (2009)
I finally get the Zachary Quinto lust.
OTHER AWESOMENESS FROM THE JANELLE MONAE SHOW.
I MET UHURA!!! We were sitting right next to her. I shook her hand, gave her my ice, told her she was an inspiration to me as an African American performer, and totally got my entire mind blown.
GPOYW
She was so nice. It was really an honor to meet her. We were sitting near a bunch of local Louisville celebrities too. The girls from the reality show filmed in town were sitting behind us. They acted like women who you would cast in a reality show, lol.
Anyway, my friend John actually switched seats with me so I could sit next to her. She was in Louisville to speak at the Idea Festival. Janelle Monae interviewed Ms Nichols (LUCKY) for the festival. Janelle had just performed… you can see one of her band members behind us. They all wanted to get their picture taken with Ms Nichols too.
went to an amazing antique place with the boy today.
discovered these rather fetching star trek plates.
didn’t love them enough to buy them though ha.
Missed opportunity.
OH MY GOD I WANT TO OWN THE ST:TNG ONES!!!
Another childhood crush of mine: LeVar Burton.
This was at like age 4? 6 possibly 7? Who knows.
I wanted to marry him.
He’s Black, handsome, smart, funny and LOVES TO READ BOOKS! I mean, some now-adults might refer to him as a “Role model,” in that show, but he was my tv boyfriend.
I mean, the book thing is really what inspired my love. He clearly loved talking about books just as much as I did. The same kinds of books I was reading!
Wow.
I mean, there really wasn’t any kid my age who had the reading comprehension skills to discuss the many levels of Liang and the Magic Paintbrush. I imagined discussing these books with him, and hanging out like peers.
Then he was on Star Trek: The Next Generation?? AAAH! YES! (The crossover episode on reading rainbow where they show you Lt. Warf’s makeup and Jeordi’s eye thingy was like spotting a goddamn unicorn in the wild. Life stopped whenever that shit came on.)
Holy fuck, it was like LeVar and I were meant to be, aside from the fact that he was old enough to be my dad, and was a person on tv.
But I clearly never let that mundane, trivial sort of thing keep my hopes suppressed. My next crush was a cartoon character.
Wil Wheaton!
Star Trek: The Next Generation was really the stuff of my childhood. My mom and I would watch it every Sunday at 7, and we’d pop popcorn.
It was such a ritual that sometimes it would circle around my hair being washed and braided. My mom ensured that my hair was washed once a week*. Sunday was the best day, schedule wise, and we were going to be spending an hour watching what went on in the future with Capin’ Picard & His mates.
My favorite character was Doctor Beverly Crusher. What an awesome woman. She’s a DOCTOR AND AN ASTRONAUT. Take that, Barbie.
I was also in love with commander Data. Brent Spiner is admittedly one of my favorite actors. I wanted to show his character compassion, and straight up? In the 80’s he was a really hot motherfucker. I always freak the fuck out when I see him in a movie or a cameo of his on a tv show.
I watched Voyager and liked it just because the captain was a woman, but their life kind of sucked. It was like a more serious lost-in-space. I liked the doctor character the most, again. A robot-doctor!
My shit got blown a few years back when a guy I worked with, Drew (The Blame it on Drew’s Cancer guy), started this program for Gmail addresses for Troops overseas… and MOTHERFUCKIN WIL WHEATON GOT INVOLVED. He also has a tumblr. Who knew?
Anyway, ST:TNG is the shit.
*Don’t freak out White people, that’s only about how often most Black folks wash their hair.
I just sent the geekiest text ever.
I’m a nerd about astrology, and I also happen to be a genuine nerd who loves technology, reads the occasional book, and loves sci fi and RPGs.
I just texted a friend:
To support your Aquarians are Robots Theory, Brent Spiner was born in the same week of Aquarius as I was.
Not only do I know who Brent Spiner is, I had a huge crush on him and LeVar Burton as a little girl.
I had a crush on LeVar before ST:TNG. Reading Rainbow made him sexy enough to my five-year-old hyper-book-consuming brain.
