Admissions of a former Anime Nerd

All the kids seem to be into anime these days. Back in the 90’s when I was a teenager, only the most serious of hardcore nerdy trendsetters, such as myself, were seriously into anime.

"私オタクだ!”

Watashi wa otaku da!” We’d announce about ourselves, proudly.

"I’m a nerd!" is the translation. A proclamation of how geeky we were for Japanese cartoons and certain aspects of the culture. We were Otaku! [otaku means geek or nerd] We were were loud, out and proud.

Well, I was, anyway.

I spent a lot of time on SailorMoon.org in the early 90’s, which was basically a place for girls and boys who loved sailor moon to go and talk about the show, share pictures and … well. That was pretty much it. To get totally hipster on you, we were sharing gifs before a lot of y’all tumblr users were born. We’d do AIM chats and talk about everything in our lives, and talk a lot about Sailor Moon.

Which should I be for which day?

So I have two Halloween Engagments. The Revenge of Ricky Williams is playing a show on October 30th, and there’s a KILLER ENORMOUS OMFG halloween party actually *on* halloween. I can’t decide what I’ll wear to each because I have decided that I’m going to spill out the cash for both of my favorite 1980’s Token Black Girl Character costumes:

Orange Blossom from Strawberry Shortcake (which I actually found PRE PACKAGED, can you fucking believe that? They didn’t sell Orange Blossom costumes pre packaged when I was a kid!)

Indigo from Rainbow Brite. I didn’t really identify with Indigo because she was very shy, but she did like to act and perform.

———

Honestly, I really ought to start Performing AS Shana Elmsford from Jem & The Holograms. I mean, I already have her look going.

There’s also always Iris from Rose Petal Place. Wasn’t really into that cartoon, but I LOOOOVED the books.

(PS: WHAT WAS WITH THE 80’s ASSIGNING THE COLOR PURPLE TO BLACK WOMEN? THAT ISN’T FUCKING FUNNY YOU GUYS.)
