KITTY PLOP

My boyfriend is awesome, because  he’s been sending me hilarious cat gifs and silly youtube videos today, which are totally helping me make it through.

And so, here’s a video about a woman who runs a Cat Circus.

This is my new friend. I’ve decided I’m gonna call her Esmerelda, because when I asked her what her name was, she didn’t respond.
Anyway, yesterday I left the house feeling kind of bummed out about having to go talk to my mother. Esmeralda came directly to me as I exited the building and meowed at me. She hung out and let me pet her and rubbed on my legs and skirt for a little while.
We talked, and I let her know that I had to go, but I thought she was looking a little skinny so maybe I’d grab her some food. She meowed at the prospect, and followed me to the end of the shady tree area on my way to the car.
When I came back she was laying next to a potted plant, totally stretched out and motionless. I was terrified by the thought that she may have died of heat exhaustion or starvation while I was gone.  But when I said, “Hey kitty?” she meowed at me again and let me pet her.
In our conversation she expressed that she still hadn’t had anything to eat, so I went back to my car and drove to the store. Again, she followed me to the edge of the shade, meowing, asking questions I’m not sure I had answers for. I reassured that this time, I would return with food.
At the store, I saw canned 9 Lives cat food. It was 99 cents a can. The guy behind the counter asked me, “Do you have a cat?” and I said, “No, but there’s a little hungry cat in the alley, and I think the people who take care of her are gone.” I handed him 2 dollars and asked him if he needed tax. He replied, “No, don’t worry about it. You’re doing a nice thing for the kitty. You do something nice for her, I do something nice for you.”
My heart grew 3 sizes.
Then I got back to the apartment building, and there was little Esmeralda, chilling in the shade. I opened the can and said, “Here’s dinner!” She meowed as she bounced over, and I put the can down. Immediately her face was in the can, and I heard the happiest sound I ever heard from her: satisfied lapping and munching noises.

Things I have in common with cats

  1. I like to nap during the day
  2. I like raw fish
  3. I like to play with string (knitting, basically)
  4. I spend a decent amount of my day grooming myself
  5. People tend to like pictures of me on the internet.

In which a tiny kitten falls down a hole into an underground dungeon for hours, but then gets rescued (!), and eats an ear of corn to celebrate, as it should.

Similar things have happened in the past — an underground dungeon may, or may have not been involved. See picture below. (Allan Grant—Time & Life Pictures/Getty Images)

I would like all of you to appreciate that NPR reblogged Life magazine who reblogged Newsweek’s picture of a cat eating corn on the cob.
Residents of the internet, we have won this day.

I LOVE IT.

I LOVE IT.

I just watched a video of a cat soothing a crying baby to sleep.

I mean. You guys. For real? Wow, that’s the cutest fucking thing.

But this stuff has surely been happening for the past like, bajillion years.

The internet makes sharing the cutest, most amazing human-animal interactions real. Because y’all know you’re thinking, “That’s bullshit. A cat? Soothing a crying baby to sleep? Get the fuck outta here.”

While Prince George’s County has been rocked in the past month by everything from earthquakes to hurricanes to heavy flooding, one critter — a weeks-old kitten — beat the odds and managed to survive it all, in part thanks to a good Samaritan.

Wayne Smith, who found the kitten, named it Yoda, after the diminutive Star Wars character with giant ears.
